Drivers vs. Biometrics in Rotterdam
Starting in May, truck drivers entering the ECT terminal in Rotterdam may be required to undergo facial recognition. The idea of our faces traveling faster to China than we ever will to Beijing raises serious concerns.

Will drivers, as always, accept it in silence - or will someone finally stand up and say: NO?

Today, I sent an email to ECT with the following questions:
• Where are the biometric data physically stored - in which country and by which company?
• What specific security measures are taken to protect facial recognition data from unauthorized access, data breaches, or cyberattacks? (e.g., encryption standards, access control, regular security audits)
• Are the facial recognition data shared with third parties, including government agencies, and on what legal basis?
• What is the data retention period, and how are the facial images securely deleted afterwards?
• Is the facial recognition system compliant with the GDPR (Regulation (EU) 2016/679), especially regarding consent, data minimization, and user rights?
• Which biometric technology provider is being used, and where are their servers located?

As a truck driver, I demand full transparency on how my biometric data is handled, to ensure my privacy is protected and EU regulations are respected.
